Private Franklin Grillo is a fresh-faced infantryman in the 101st Airborne. He's been dispatched to the Ardennes Forest outside of Bastogne to assist Baker Company against a surprise attack by the Germans. Outgunned, low on ammo, food, and supplies, the men along the new front are up against an army 10 times their size.
Barely able to hold out the 101st now face a new threat. German soldiers who take massive amounts of damage but keep on attacking.

3.5 - 4 / After having read "By the Blood of Heroes" in the The Great Undead War series by Joseph Nassise, I was prepared for some similarities and a possible love or hate verdict.Screaming Eagles has some similarities but does stand solidly on its own two legs. The Americans are in deep in Germany when some smart Doctors decide to create enhanced soldiers. It blows up from there.
The book is a page turner.
It covers 4-5 key characters from their POV to tell a well knit story with heaps of action.
I enjoyed the read and it's in my top 5 zombie books.
My ONLY problem: I think the book needed another edit or check by an editor. I am a pedant when it comes to grammar, I admit, but there were quite a few mistakes. Another revision would have solved that and made the book that much more solid.
Great read and I will read the next one.

Screaming Eagles The Front Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Timothy W Long David Moody Craig DiLouie Todd Menesses Books Reviews
The 101st Airborne, or "Screaming Eagles", played an important role in the Battle of Bulge, helping to defend the surrounded city of Bastogne. The authors imagine a Nazi attempt to create super soldiers with a serum that instead creates zombie-like creatures just as willing to attack their own side. The scenes of hordes of zombies smashing and gnawing their way through uninfected German troops, some of whom try to flee to the American side, are frightening and effective. The few soldiers that are followed are well portrayed, and the reader cares about them. It is interesting to watch events unfold even as virtually no one has a preconceived idea about zombies, which didn't become widely popularized until George Romero. We hear Gen. McAuliffe utter his famous line, "Nuts", and Otto Skorzeny puts in a cameo. The winter cold is well done.
The problem for me was that the book is about zombie hordes attacking over and over, rather than the spread of the infection bite by bite. One German zombie is captured and a corporal watching over him disappears. This should tell the reader that the corporal will make a later appearance as a zombie, right? Nope, unless I somehow missed it. In other words, neither the American soldiers nor the reader has any anticipation that the zombie infection is going to start to appear among our own side, though American soldiers do make an appearance in the ranks of the horde.
It is a relatively short book, and does not have a particularly good dramatic structure, though the defense of Bastogne is inherently dramatic. It is most effective in describing small slices of combat, somewhat detached from the larger picture. All in all, not as good as I had hoped it would be but still worth reading.
Enjoyed the book! Waiting for the next in the series!
Was not impressed with writing, just part of the story.
Excelltn blending of WWII action and zombies.
I was a bit wary getting this book world war 2 & zombies but it was a great read and will get the next one
Not usually a reader of 'alternative history' I was initially reluctant to start this series. However as I had read the author before (and thoroughly enjoyed it) I gave it a go and I'm so glad I did! Looking forward to Corporal Grillos next outing!
This was my first book in this genre and I found i enjoyed it. Being a history buff with a keen interest in WWII I found this boot to be interesting and fun to read. The references to events and equipment used appeared to be mostly accurate and well thought out. I am looking forward to the next installment in the series. Thanks Timothy W. Long
